Decoration Day

Memorial Day was formally known as Decoration Day. (insert eye sparkle here) As Americans everywhere observed the holiday by decorating the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags, I remembered our fallen comrades with a different sortof medallion. See if you can find what I am talking about:

Yessum...it's that navy and white book. Actually it is box made to look like a book. Sortof like a book that you would find in a creepy old library and it would contain a weapon or secrets on how to perform a brain transfer or something like that. Basically this home decor item is pulling a Michael Jackson....and you know what I mean :) Anyhoo - this small non-creepy box is covered in a great navy and white medallion patterned fabric.

My friend Brook spied it while we were shopping in the HomeGoods clearance section. It actually matches her pillows quite perfectly. But she wasn't sure if she would use a book/box. (And obviously I love storage boxes in my living room). So I told her that if she didn't buy it, I would. And at $3 it was quite a steal. They actually had bigger sizes but I knew that this small one would suit me just peachy. Wanna guess what I had in mind for this little gem?

The correct answer is a pedicure kit! One hundred and fourteen points if you guessed it right! When Brook asked what I was gonna use it for...a pedicure kit was the first thing that came to mind. It was the perfect size for holding clippers, nail files, some cotton balls for spreading the toes ('you gotta keep em separated!' Holla Offspring!) and of course, some polish. Because let's be honest - I do not notice the toe-funk until I am plopped on the couch. And then I am too pooped to retrieve said toe-funk removal utensils.

Speaking of couch - doesn't the navy and white of the medallion fabric go with the colors of the new summery sofa pillows just like bacon & eggs. Not that I would ever put bacon or eggs on the sofa...that would be messy. And a complete waste of bacon.

I especially like the layered look with the book - "What Every Husband Should Know" and my little Hooker art. I don't know why but that title is hilarious to me.

So there you have it folks. A fab little side storage soley (heehee) devoted to toes. Plus a perfect reminder that every time I look down at my fungus & jam free nails or at the living room side table, that I should be uber thankful for those who gave their lives so that I can have the freedom to worry about mundane and insignificant things like hangnails. Seriously, can I get a 'wa' to the 'hoo' !?!? WAHOO!

Questions - how did you celebrate Memorial Day? Anybody write letters or actually decorate a soldiers grave? Any fireworks? Did you do like me & decorate? What would you have put in this little box/book of toenail fun? And yes, prepackaged pork products did cross my mind as a must for a pedicure kit...just sayin.

I actually saw the exact same book storage at Marshall the other day, and wanted to get it but didn't know what to do with it. LOL. Not sure if I would use it as a mani/pedi kit, but I'm sure I can find something just as functional.

I knew I'd be seeing that book on someone awesome's blog. I saw that baby at Homegoods last week and have been racking my brain trying to come up with a spot where it would look good. Hasn't happened yet and won't likely since I've now got bacon and eggs on the brain. Why do you do this to me?!?!?

Saw that same "book" at my Home Goods, too. Glad you were able to put it to good use! : )

I saw the same book at marshalls, but I dont have the navy acccents that you have, and I have to tell you, I dont know you at all, but I sat there thinking "How could I send this to Bowerpower girl...surely she doesnt have her address listed...would it be too stalkerish if I tried to find it to send her this book box. It would *so* go with her decor" And see! I didn't even have to get all stalkerish, cause you found it yourself. So weird!

Hilarious choice of book title that you paired it with... "What Every Husband Should Know!" Love it!

Wow - all of ya'll knew about this box and didn't tell me!?!?! This is exactly why God invented cell phone cameras. C'mon people!

Hey there Family of Foxes - I could be wrong about this one but I do not think that stalkership includes gifts...now if the gift is you and the gift wrap is sparse...then I reserve the right to review the gift to determine stalker status :)

1st thing, I LOVE your blog! You are so funny and can you decorate my house? I stink at it!

I also saw that same box on clearance at Marshall's yesterday but didn't realize it was a box or else I would have grabbed it to stash some stuff in too! Glad you can find a good use for it.

Oooh, the pattern is oh so chic!
So I totally want one of these and when I shouted about it to Mr. FC after seeing yours, it went like this:

Me: Can I get one to hide my stuff stylishly?
Mr. FC: Hide what? Like illegal stuff?
Me: *silence as I don't even know how to respond to that one*

I love it.

But, to be honest - I'm too focused on your pillows that make me drool every time.

I have white faux croc ones that I store things in but I also bought the same blue box and the green one from Marshall's. Sadly mine were not on clearance so I paid the $7 for each one. I'm just trying to decide what to put in them now and may steal your pedi kit idea!

I love the new addition. It fits perfect with your decor. I also love how it looks layered.

Mr. McB and I went camping with friends for Memorial Day. Yay! :)

I just found your blog yesterday through "This Young House" and of course the first post I read is about a book/box! I bought 2 this weekend at Home Goods to help put the finishing touches on our bedroom, though mine are green. My boyfriend says they are weird, but I love them! I've now got a great place to store all my jewlery that also looks pretty on our dresser. Yay! Your pedi kit is perfect. I agree, I always want to do my toes while sitting on the couch, but then am just too tired to get up to get the goods to do them.
